LEARN TO WINDSURF AT NEWTOWNARDS SAILING CLUB

 

Windsurfing is an exciting and exhilarating sport. 

Imagine yourself racing over the clear waters of Strangford Lough with just the sound of the wind in your sail and water streaming beneath your board.  It's a really cool sport!! 

Actually it's really two sports.  At first, in gentle conditions you can learn the enjoyment of sailing where you want as you build up your control.  Then, with some practice, you go out with a larger sail, catch the first gust and suddenly your board takes off.   This is called planing and it's rather like a speedboat with only the back part of the boat in the water.  Once planing, you are part of a fast, dynamic and really fun sport and of course there's the Cool factor.


Windsurfing has become a whole lot easier today.  Recent design and coaching developments make learning and progressing much easier as well as assisting the moves towards more advanced techniques. Newtownards Sailing Club and Newtownards Sail Training Club offer a full range of courses and Board hire from 'Have a Go' Sessions through to to RYA Qualifications and improving.   You can book personal lessons - or why not take one of our packages giving great value for money?

'Have a Go'

Want to see if windsurfing is for you? The day provides a short onshore briefing and practice on the simulator - and then you get on the water and give it a go on your own but with safety cover on hand.   Our RYA Instructors will have you Windsurfing in no time.  Try it and see what it's all about .  Cost £50* for 2 hours.
 

RYA Start Windsurfing - Beginners

Our Start Windsurfing course is designed to get beginners up and going in the shortest possible time. Utilising the latest equipment and RYA coaching ideas, learning to windsurfing has never been easier. You will be amazed to find that by the end of the two day weekend course you will have the skills to sail your windsurf board in all directions, control the power of the wind in your sail and get yourself back to shore.

The course is run over the weekend and broken down into 3 x 2.5 hour sessions. We will have you out on the water as quickly as possible with an instructor and safety boat in operation at all times. After a little practice and on-water coaching you will soon be sailing across the wind and turning the board around. The course will concentrate on the control of your equipment and harnessing the power of the wind, you will also cover basic safety considerations and the minimum sailing theory necessary for your success.

We guarantee getting you to the required level of competency so in the unlikely event of you having any problems you will be given extra time and tuition, free of charge, to ensure you succeed. The RYA level 1 certificate allows you to hire equipment at any RYA approved centre.

Cost of this course is £180* per person
 

RYA Fastfwd Windsurfing Intermediate (planing)

Run over 3 x 2.5 hr sessions, this course is aimed at any confident windsurfer keen to progress to planing and beyond.

Fastfwd is about using the “Formula” and applying it to your windsurfing to ensure maximum progress and success.

You will first learn the 5 elements of the Formula on the Fastfwd simulator and how they can be applied to all windsurfing skills and techniques (whatever the difficulty level).

An in-depth rigging session will ensure you are getting the very most out of your equipment.

Sessions afloat will allow you to apply the Formula to your own sailing.

Specific attention will be given to rigging, launching & recovery, planing skills, harnessing, footstraps, power control and steering.

The beach start and non planing gybe will also be covered.

Fastfwd is all about improving skills so you may chose to attend specific Fastfwd courses to hone skills such as carve gybes and jumping techniques.

Courses are in the evenings and weekends between April to October at Newtownards Sailing Club, sessions are flexible and we can meet your needs with a suitable schedule when you book.

The cost of this course is £200* per person

The maximum and minimum number of people for each course is 5 people, We like to keep it at this number as it means we can spend equal time with each student. Please Note course will not run with less than 5 people.

 

Special Courses

We run specialised courses on request.  These include better planing, footstraps, gybing, harness and also sessions for groups, eg. we have run coaching sessions for women and groups of children.   Contact us for more details.

All courses are run from the club under the supervision of our RYA Principal with RYA Qualified Instructors, full rescue boat cover and the latest Windsurfing Equipment. 

Boards, sails, wetsuits and buoyancy aids can all be provided.
